Olena's learning journey across the globe

Olena Tsylke's learning journey has taken her across the globe, so she'll have plenty to pass on when she becomes qualified as a teacher.

Born and raised in a small Ukrainian town, she attended high school in her home country before moving to Canada with her family and completing her senior schooling in her new location.

Olena graduated from a life sciences degree at the University of Toronto last year and moved to CQUniversity this year to top up her teaching qualifications with a Graduate Diploma in Learning and Teaching.

The GDLT is a pre-service education program including work experience and a school internship. Graduates are eligible to apply for provisional registration with the Queensland College of Teachers (and comparable education systems inter-state and overseas).

Olena said she was glad to be doing her practicum at Allenstown State School.

"Thanks to my Year 6 mentor teacher, who is also an ICT specialist, I have an opportunity to use the latest technology in the classroom, acquiring valuable skills and knowledge.

"I am definitely going to be ready for the schools of the future!"

The visiting student said she was enjoying meeting students from a range of countries at the Capricornia College residential facility. However, transport options to and from the city were sometimes a challenge.
