Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

CQU Announces New Management Team 

Central Queensland University announced its new management structure for the University on Monday 6 May.

Professor Gary Anido will hold the new position of Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Academic and Research. Professor Rhondda Jones is Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Resources) until October 2002. And Mr Eric Laakso will become Deputy Vice-Chancellor (International and Corporate). The three Deputy Vice-Chancellors will work closely with Vice Chancellor and President, Glenice Hancock, continuing to move the university forward to better suit the needs of a growing, maturing University.

Eric Laakso was previously Vice-President (Corporate Development). In his new position as DVC International and Corporate, Laakso will oversee operations that serve the university’s 7,000 international students. He is also responsible for Alumni and Community Relations and, as such, will explore opportunities for to develop university alliances and joint ventures with industry, community and government.

Recently appointed Gary Anido, former head of the School of Telecommunications, Multimedia and IT within Melbourne University Private and Professor of Telecommunications within the University of Melbourne’s Faculty of Engineering, will now be responsible for CQU’s academic and research development. Anido, a leading researcher in the fields of telecommunications and information technology, will work towards maximizing opportunities for CQU to strategically respond to the needs of the industries and communities we serve while strengthening postdoctoral and postgraduate research programs at the university.

Rhondda Jones, formerly Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor & Operations Manager, will now oversee staff and student services and Industrial Relations as Deputy Vice Chancellor (Resources). As DVC Resources, Jones will be responsible for the planning and management of university systems and processes that will facilitate academic progress and enhance student satisfaction in compliance with legislative requirements.
