Skills shortage forum due in Emerald
Published on 15 February, 2006
Strategies to help businesses overcome skills and labour shortages will be presented during a free public forum in Emerald, from 6.30pm on Wednesday March 1.
The Emerald Chamber of Commerce/Central Queensland University event will feature a welcome by chamber president Craig Edmonston and presentations by CQU School of Management academics Professor Paul Hyland and Karen Becker.
Professor Hyland, whose recent Relocation Choices report sparked a Courier Mail editorial (15/2/06), will address the management of high growth demands on business capacity. He will help the audience understand the labour market and shortages, as well as discussing overseas recruitment.
Ms Becker will address what employees want, finding and keeping the right people, and alternatives to filling jobs and finding skilled workers.
The forum will include question time and a closing address by Emerald Mayor Peter Maguire.
"The rapid expansion in the mining industry has brought many opportunities and challenges for businesses and organisations in Emerald and the Central Highlands region," Professor Hyland said. "Amid these are increased demand for products, services and labour, both skilled and unskilled.".
The event will be held in the Emerald Town Hall Supper Room.
