Girls encouraged to apply for summer school

Central Queensland girls are encouraged to apply for CQU's inaugural Girls in Maths, Science and Technology Summer School, to be held at Rockhampton campus next February 9-13.

Interested students should apply via their high school administration office.

The summer school, which is funded by a grant from Education Queensland and Central Queensland University, will provide interesting and stimulating experiences in the fields of mathematics, science, technology and engineering. The program will also include excursions, presentations by key women in related fields and team activities.

Coordinator Sheila Jeffery said the summer school aimed to encourage more girls throughout Central Queensland to continue their interest in mathematics, science and technology into years 11 and 12 and beyond, thus keeping their options open for future career pathways. The summer school is open to girls entering Year 10 in 2004 from state and private schools. Participation by girls from regional isolated areas is encouraged. The organising committee will select applicants expected to gain the most benefit from the summer school activities.

“Girls may not necessarily be the highest achievers, but should have demonstrated an interest and ability in mathematics and science subjects. We hope to be able to select girls who need encouragement to maintain their interest in studying these subjects,” Mrs Jeffery said.

The costs associated with attending the summer school (travel, accommodation, meals, all activities) will be covered by the grant from Education Queensland. Application forms have been sent to all schools in Central Queensland. Any girls interested in attending the summer school should approach their school for an application forms and an information sheet.

“We hope to provide the girls with alternative career options – some may not be traditional female roles. We also hope to raise the girls’ confidence to pursue exciting and rewarding careers in what are often seen as non-traditional areas for women.” Interested parents, teachers and students can phone Sheila Jeffery on 4930 9343 or email s.jeffery@cqu.edu.au -- ENDS For details/interview contact Sheila Jeffery on 07 4930 9343.
