Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Fresh staff profile for CQU Melbourne 

As part of a series of moves at CQU Melbourne International Campus, Professor Paul Rodan has accepted the new role of General Manager, Academic Programs for the Australian International Campuses (based in Melbourne).

Consequential transfers are Professor Gerry Anderson who will move from the role of Sub-Dean, Faculty of Business & Law to Head, Academic Programs and Ken Bruce who will take up the role of Acting Sub-Dean, Faculty of Business & Law.

Professor Paul Rodan has been with CMS since his appointment at CQU Melbourne in April, 2002.

Professor Rodan has a BA (Hons) from the University of Western Australia, an MA from the University of Queensland and a PhD from Monash University.

PhotoID:1730 He has worked in Australian tertiary education for more than 30 years, holding appointments at Queensland, La Trobe and Monash universities.

He has also worked at (the former) Chisholm Institute of Technology and has taught part-time at Queensland University of Technology and RMIT University.

Professor Rodan’s career has covered teaching (politics and government) and academic administration at central and faculty level.

He is a commentator on public affairs for radio stations in Brisbane and Melbourne and has appeared on SBS national television.

He had a column with 'The Age' newspaper between 2000 and 2002 and is currently on the editorial board of the refereed journal 'Australian Universities Review'.

He is currently completing a chapter on Sir Rupert Hamer for a forthcoming book about Victorian premiers.

At present, Professor Rodan is supervising two students in Central Queensland University’s professional doctorate program.

He served on the governing council of Monash University for eight years, and on a wide range of committees and working parties, encompassing nearly every aspect of university life.

He has also been a consultant for Victoria University of Technology, Box Hill Institute of TAFE and the Australian Guild of Music.

Professor Rodan is currently an Adjunct Professor of the Faculty of Education & Creative Arts at CQU and a Senior Honorary Research Fellow in the School of Political & Social Inquiry at Monash University.

Professor Gerry Anderson, Head, Academic Programs, has held a variety of academic positions across a wide range of disciplines which include statistics, economics, information technology, community development and telecommunications.

Prior to assuming the role as Sub-Dean Faculty of Business&Law at CQU Melbourne, Professor Anderson served in a number of roles at the University of Ballarat: Professor and Head of the School Information Technology and Mathematical Sciences; Dean of Engineering and Science; and Pro-Vice-Chancellor and Director of Education and Academic Services.

In addition, Professor Anderson has been involved in many external committees and maintains professional memberships including: Chair of the Victorian Regional Councils for Adult, Community and Further Education, a member of the Australian Telecommunications Board for Regional Telecommunications, Chair of the Academic Committee for e-Learning associated with the World Economic Forum and a member of the Victoria Government Tertiary Education Accreditation Panel in Business and Information Technology.

Recently Professor Anderson was invited to participate on a new Higher Education Review Panel for an application by Northern Melbourne Institute of TAFE.

Ken Bruce was featured in a recent Uninews edition after facilitating a Financial Training Manager’s Forum on Australian Securities and Investments Commission (ASIC) Licensing Requirements for Continuing Education. Participants at the Forum included global companies such as Merrill Lynch and ING.

Professor Ken Hawkins is the Chief General Manager - International Campuses and a Director of C Management Services P/L and Transmedian Pty Ltd.

He is currently Honorary Professor at Central Queensland University. Ken recently had a paper successfully presented at the Pre-Olympic Scientific Congress in Thessaloniki, Greece.

A follow up paper, including the findings that both he and Emeritus Professor Cheffers (Boston University) gained during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games in Greece, was completed at the Australian Sports Medicine Conference in a symposium entitled “Lessons from the Summer Olympics” in Alice Springs in October this year.

Barbara Abou-Lehaf is the Campus Director at CQU Melbourne. Barbara is currently undertaking an MBA at the Melbourne Business School. Prior to commencing with CQU Melbourne in January 2002, Barbara was a senior manager at Chisholm Institute of TAFE responsible for the overall Institute planning, the development, reporting and review of KPI’s and continuous improvement.

Collectively, Paul, Gerry, Ken, Barbara and Ken form a strong senior management team as well as maintaining active levels of scholarly productivity that is increasingly growing via other staff members of CMS. Many areas of this activity are in collaboration with colleagues at CQU.
