ITD has worked all week to ensure the university computer systems remain operational while technicians have begun preparations to install a new uninterruptible power supply (UPS) by the beginning of next week. The CQU community has -- and may experience again -- some disruption in services until the changeover to the new UPS. Specialists will be on-site this weekend, monitoring systems and completing pre-installation procedures. The process should be completed early next week.

A fire Friday night at the Rockhampton campus destroyed the original UPS (pictured), taking down servers and other computing and communications equipment within the Central Queensland University community. By Saturday, however, a team from ITD and Buildings & Grounds had established temporary power sources and brought systems back on-line. A UPS supplies “clean” electrical power to the central computing systems through batteries, which protects them from surges or reductions in general electricity.

“Our students and staff, especially our distance-based students, should know that we’re working to get all systems permanently back on line as soon as possible,” said a university spokesman.

Vice Chancellor Glenice Hancock thanked Ian Jenkins, John Voss, Adrian Yarrow, Justin Parry, Chris Parry, Merv Connell, Andrew White, Scott Eiby, Russell Tomkins, Phil Hancock, Damon Wells and Grant Farrell for their quick response and sustained effort to keep systems operational.

“Grant showed particular courage by donning breathing apparatus and entering the fire affected area to isolate the supply so the fire brigade could enter,” said Professor Hancock.
