Mackay student mentors' awards boosted to $1000

In a first for CQU Mackay, Head of Campus Phillip Clift awarded $250 cheques to four mentors in recognition of their dedication for helping first-year students settle into university life.
The support offered by Karin Barron, Maria Harris, Esther McIlvenna and Adrianne Page was acknowledged in front of 50 staff and students who attended the awards dinner.
Mentor Program Co-ordinator Jocelyn Wood said feedback from many first-year students indicated they would be lost without the support offered through the Student Mentor Program.
"CQU Mackay was able to match 98 per cent of the 2002 first-year students with mentors who offered advice about university life," she said.
"Apart from completing various university-related activities together in Orientation Week, the mentor becomes a link between the student and university. They help the students ease into tertiary study." Over 40 mentors took part this year, with each student linked to a mentor from their faculty.
Ms Wood said students new to Mackay appreciated the extra assistance in navigating around the campus.
Already 47 mentors have volunteered to take part in the 2003 program. Photo Caption (Mentors2002H): CQU Mackay Mentors 2002 receive recognition for their efforts at the awards night.
