Allies combat homophobia
Published on 08 May, 2013
The CQUniversity Ally Program is going from strength to strength after the roll-out of the new Ally Network on Moodle for Term 1 2013.
This network is for everyone who is interested in supporting LGBTI (lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and intersex) people at CQUniversity. Through the Ally Network you will have the opportunity of meeting people, sharing resources and links, and having discussions. All staff and students can be involved in the Network.
Michelle Kerr and Dr Gemma Mann get behind the Ally concept
With a combination of online and face-to-face training, it is easy for any student or staff member to become a trained Ally.
Currently there are 32 trained Allies and anyone can sign up at any time. Allies can help students individually if they need to talk to someone, or need help finding resources. Just as importantly, Allies help combat homophobia by noticing it and responding to it; simply being a part of the Ally Network signals your support of LGBTI students and staff at CQUniversity.
Friday, May 17 is International Day Against Homophobia and is also the day when we are running the next round of Ally training at Rockhampton campus. Homophobia has no place at CQUniversity, on any campus or in our online space. Having the Ally Program is as a visual sign that the University is an accepting and open place where people can be themselves.
