Uni supports reconciliation carnival

CQUniversity has extended its support of Central Queensland Indigenous Development Ltd (CQID) by sponsoring the fourth Annual Indigenous Reconciliation Carnival, taking place from Saturday January 22 to Monday January 24 at Rockhampton's Browne Park.

"The key concepts of the carnival are to celebrate and initiate the reconciliation process through a celebration of Indigenous culture, arts and sport in the spirit of understanding and reconciliation," said General Manager of Central Queensland Indigenous Development Jason Field.

PhotoID:10291The carnival will see 18 open men's teams, 3 open women's teams and 4 junior teams from all over Queensland compete over three days. The crowd is expected to be in excess of 20,000 for the three days.

Despite many sporting events being cancelled due to flooding, the carnival is going ahead as planned, and is expected will be an exciting tournament with around 18 teams participating from as far north as the Torres Strait.

CQUniversity Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman said CQUniversity has been taking significant steps towards becoming more engaged with its Indigenous communities, and plans to work with CQID to also develop work-readiness programs.

"Becoming more engaged with our Indigenous community, we hope to enhance access to the university through employment as well as student enrolments and traineeships."

The University's Nulloo Yumbah Centre recently celebrated 25 years of service to Central Queensland's Indigenous communities by encouraging active reconciliation.

Carnival tickets will be available on the door for $5 per adult and $2 for under-12s.
