Professor Happell used her visit in May to review Bahrain's approach to community mental health nursing and to recommend further community developments for the longer-term.

She said that while Australia now has most mental health care provided in the community, Bahrain still has mainly inpatient care within one institution and only a very small number of community mental health nurses to provide home-based care.

"The limited number of nurses who work in community settings means they are only able to provide a limited service for each client." she said.

Professor Happell said Bahrain had expressed an interest in professional development to create a larger pool of qualified nurses.

She said there was potential for CQUniversity to help with expertise and credentialism, although the delivery of education was likely to be handled in Bahrain itself.
