The outstanding work of CQUniversity Mackay 2008 mentors has been recognised during an annual presentation evening held recently at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music.
The 2008 Mackay Mentor of the Year Award was Wendy Dempster and the Mackay Outstanding Mentor Award was presented to Robert Smith. Kylie Barron and Chris McConochie received Mentor Leader Certificates and all remaining mentors received Certificates of Appreciation.
A special accolade was also given to Mackay student, Janet Surman, being awarded the CQUniversity Flex Mentor Award. This award is only presented to one student across the entire University. Janet was nominated for this award by her mentees and University staff for her support as a mentor in off campus and on campus activities.
CQUniversity's Student Mentor and Leadership Program assists new students to quickly feel at home through their first year of study by assigning them a second or third-year trained mentor.
Student Mentors are students who have 'been there' and survived, as well as having acquired a great deal of information about the tertiary education environment and how the 'system' works.
Throughout the course of the year, students have a mentor to go to for guidance or assistance on any issues they might be having.
Dr Cecily Knight, Mackay Campus Academic Manager and Mary McLeod, Manager Student Support Centre, presented the awards to the students and praised the efforts of all mentors involved in the program.
"The mentor program is an excellent program that new students benefit from on many levels. We look forward to seeing more mentors helping new students next year," Dr Cecily Knight said.
