Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

Student volunteers test mettle at ironman event 

A group of CQU sport management students and a recent human movements graduate are key volunteers for the Half Ironman Triathlon to be held at Rydes Capricorn Resort on August 17.

According to lecturer Dr Geoff Dickson, the human movements science graduate (Rikki Moriarty) enjoyed her time working at this event so much she has taken holidays from her normal employment to return to the event as a volunteer.

\"There are key students who work on the event for about four to five days - swim course coordinator, bike course coordinator, run course coordinator and aid station coordinator...these students are responsible for the logistics and planning,\" Dr Dickson said.

\"After that we have a group of students who wort on the event on the Saturday and Sunday and a third group who get involved just on the Sunday.\" The August 17th event comprises the Ironman Wetsuits 1.9km swim, the Rydges Capricorn 90.1km bike ride and the Asics half marathon (21kms).

The 2003 Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman weekend also includes a growing Expo of sporting and outdoors goods and products. Two of Australia\'s top triathletes are among more than 220 who have already confirmed their entry for what is Australia?s fastest growing destination race. The Rydges Capricorn Half Ironman is very popular with Australian triathletes who have qualified to race in the Ironman Triathlon World Championships, the famed Hawaiian Ironman! Many of the 2003 Australian Team members for Hawaii will also be competing in Yeppoon.
