CQU's own Dr Karl produces new Torres Strait Islander CD

'Sailing the Southeast Wind' is a new CD of Torres Strait Islander maritime music. Dr Karl Neuenfeldt from CQU's Faculty of Informatics and Communication co-produced the CD in collaboration with North Queensland Indigenous communities.

PhotoID:798 It features well-known artists such as Seaman Dan and two of the Mills Sisters, Cessa and Ina, as well as younger, emerging artists. The songs were recorded on-location at Thursday Island and present a unique blend of traditional and contemporary music linked to the maritime environment of Torres Strait.

There are songs about pearling luggers and trochus boats, children's play songs about the reefs and islands, and a 13-minute musical and environmental soundscape called 'Eventide on the Islands'.

The 'Ailan-style' music of Torres Strait is unique in Australia, a fascinating blend of the multicultural musical styles still heard in the region. 'Sailing the Southeast Wind' is a special CD about a special part of Queensland and Australia.

For more information or a copy of the CD contact Dr. Karl Neuenfeldt at CQU-Bundaberg 07 4150 7019 or k.neuenfeldt@cqu.edu.au or 0417 194 050
