Funding helps 'manufacture' future for Bundaberg students

A grant of $329 000 to CQU Bundaberg from the Sustainable Regions Funding Program will provide the impetus to expand the nationally and internationally-recognised innovative CAD/CAM technologies developed by Bundaberg State High School’s Technology Design Centre.

The Centre was created last year as a direct result of the vision of teacher Keith Holledge and a partnership between Education Queensland and Re-Engineering Australia Forum.

Collaboration between CQU Bundaberg, Bundaberg State High School, local training providers and industry will contribute to rebuilding a locally-sourced, stable industrial workforce after recent losses following the closure of Austoft and work reduction by Walkers Engineering.

“The project’s goal is to enable students to work collaboratively with their peers, universities and high-tech industry on design and technology projects by allowing remote access to Bundaberg State High School’s facilities,” Mr Holledge said.

The expanded facilities are available to local entrepreneurs, providing low-risk testing of business innovations.

CAD/CAM design applications important to company development can be tested prior to making a commitment to infrastructure, thus facilitating new manufacturing company start-ups.

“CQU Bundaberg is very happy to support this process to help our regional community,” Head of Campus, Professor Alex Grady said.

“There are strong potential synergies between this project and the new developments taking place at the new Bundaberg Technology Park.”.

Bundaberg Technology Park will provide a mix of site, infrastructure and support services designed to encourage a strong, actively growing manufacturing industry based in Bundaberg.
