People want stars to seem both ordinary and extraordinary, says academic

Recent news that actress Keira Knightley’s bust has been digitally enhanced in several movie posters is further evidence that people want stars to seem ordinary and approachable yet also extraordinary.

PhotoID:1519 That is according to CQU academic Dr Jeannette Delamoir whose research interests include Australians in early Hollywood and the ‘freak show’ discourse about stars in today’s magazines.

Dr Delamoir said magazines routinely presented glamourous photos of stars who have not only been digitally enhanced, but have also benefitted from expert make-up, hair and fashion styling.

However, they also included ‘candid’ shots representing stars looking ordinary “so readers can emotionally connect with the stars as 'real' people." ENDS.
