Singer Sophie writes herself into 'Tosca' role

Singer Sophie Phillis is finding the 'Tosca, the technopera' project is also helping her expand her acting and writing skills.
As well as taking the lead role, the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music student has flung herself into the 'freeze-frame' acting required for the digital FX backdrops and also helped write a range of character parts, including her own.
The Conservatorium is touring 'Tosca' to Mackay, Rockhampton, Gladstone and Bundaberg in September.
Details on the production are here
"This acting part of the production in general proved to be quite challenging, educational and equally entertaining at times," she said.
"When Kim Kirkman first explained the concept and idea of ‘Tosca', I was immediately interested in the project. It's definitely something special and very different to anything I've seen before."
Born in Emerald as the second-eldest of 6 children, Sophie lived on a property outside town until she was 18 and tried plenty of sports and activities.
She says her lack of coordination influenced her decision to stick with a career in singing, but also says she enjoys wakeboarding at the nearest dam.
A contact supplied by the Conservatorium recently helped Sophie secure a job as a backing singer for Candice Alley's next album, recorded at Tiger studios in Sydney.
She has also drawn on a family contact - a cousin who is a music engineer in Brisbane - to secure session vocal work recording advertising jingles for radio from time to time.
