The project will be led by Dr Ashley Bunce, the Marine Ecology Program Leader based at CQU's Centre for Environmental Management in Gladstone.

Dr Bunce, in conjunction with Liz Tanner from the Woongarra Coast Monitoring & Education Project, has also secured funding of $85,000 from the Burnett Mary Regional Group to conduct a project on community coastal water.

A specialist on shorebirds and seabirds, Dr Bunce was previously based at Deakin University before coming to CQU in January.

He said the Marine Ecology Program was also currently developing research to map significant inshore coral reefs within the Burnett Mary region and was keen to build its capacity in this area, as many southern sections of the Great Barrier Reef were relatively unknown, compared to the northern section off Townsville and Cairns.
