CQCM lecturer records 'Sounds of Mackay'

If you could turn down the clamour of the Mackay, and listen to the rhythm of life in the Mackay region, what would you hear? The answer can be found on a CD on sounds recorded in Mackay with instrumental backing created by CQCM lecturer, Kim Kirkman.

PhotoID:3137 You can expect to hear sounds like the gentle lapping of coastal waves, early morning tunes from over 40 local birds, summer calls of crickets and cicadas and the beginning of a storm in the wet season.

Since November last year, Kim Kirkman has been keeping his ear to the ground around Mackay listening out for sounds, that some of us never notice.

“I think that it is easier to create something like this when you have not lived in Mackay very long, before you start taking it for granted. It was a striking contrast for me when I moved here from London,” said Kim.

Kim’s CD launch was enjoyed by over 150 people during the Festival of the Arts week, at the Mackay City Library. Kim’s music was supported by a collection of stunning photographs taken in Mackay by photographer Dean Whitling and will be on display for the next month.

‘Sounds of Mackay’ CD’s can be purchased at the CQCM reception, the Mackay City Library or by contacting Kim Kirkman on extension 7814.
