Uni groups welcome at Science at the Criterion event

CQU staff and students are welcome at the ABC Science at the Criterion Hotel event, with the subect 'Could your genes predict your future?'.

Come along and join ABC personalities and Queensland and NSW genetics experts in a lively discussion about the pros and cons of genetic technology, and how it affects our future.

PhotoID:1567 The free event will be held at Rockhampton’s historic Criterion Hotel on Wednesday night, June 23, from 6.30pm.

“Could Your Genes Predict Your Future” is a public event about genetic research and its implications for you and your family.

Issues will be raised: Are there such things as good or bad genes? How does someone know if they might inherit cancer? Should fathers be allowed to check their kid’s DNA for paternity? How much information should insurance companies or workplaces have about someone’s genes? What kinds of diseases are genetic, and what can we do about it?.

“It will be a lively evening of discussion and debate. The audience can enjoy a beer or wine and a bite to eat while they sit back and listen, or, ask your own questions,” said Dr Paul Willis from ABC TV’s Catalyst, who will be hosting the event.

Joining Paul will be ABC Rockhampton’s Ross Quinn, plus special guest speakers Dr John MacMillan (Queensland Clinical Genetics Service), Dr Kristine Barlow-Stewart (Centre for Genetics Education, Sydney), and Dr Peter Lavelle (ABC Health Matters - www.abc.net.au/health).
