Excel as a manager

Central Queensland University is making workers’ transition into management roles easier with a new workshop offered at regional centres throughout Central Queensland.

“Excelling as a First Time Manager or Supervisor Workshop” is being conducted by SkillPath Seminars’ Kati Jacobs in Bundaberg on 27 March, Gladstone on 28 March and Mackay 31 March.

Managing people is one of the toughest things to do and it doesn't come easily to many, according to a Central Queensland University’s Organisational Development and Change Manager Marilyn Van Dyke.

“When it goes well it is wonderful and when it doesn't it can be an awful experience,” Ms Van Dyke said.

“The supervision role is not one that comes naturally and it is important to not only have the necessary skills, but be able to access the right information at the right time to inform your decision making.

“Managers already have the knowledge and skills to perform in their area of expertise. That's probably what got them promoted in the first place. But being a manager or supervisor demands a new type of skill,” CQU’s Organisational Development Officer Heather Rossiter said.

“You're in charge of coordinating people and tasks ... your continued success depends directly on your ability to get things done through others,” Mrs Rossiter explained.

Here's the good news: As a new supervisor, you don't have to learn everything by doing. The “Excelling as a First Time Manager or Supervisor Workshop” will provide you with the practical tips, techniques and solutions you need for supervisory success without incurring the hard knocks that come with learning by trial and error.

“CQU’s comprehensive one-day workshop will deliver the supervisory fundamentals you need to know to achieve management success.

The program is designed for managers and supervisors who have limited training in this area.

It focuses on the unique challenges you face every day as a manager or supervisor and offers solutions to help you achieve your potential.

The program costs $199 (inclusive of GST per person).

To enrol in this course, phone Heather Rossiter at the Organisational Development Office, CQU, on (07) 4930 2112, or fax on (07) 4930 9710, or email h.rossiter@cqu.edu.au by 14 March 2003.
