Simone lights path for Australian South Sea Islanders

A vibrant community event was the setting for Simone Warkill's recognition as the first recipient of the Australian South Sea Islander Community Foundation Scholarship to graduate from CQUniversity.
A ceremony to recognise her achievement was held during the 'Linking the Generations 2008' Australian South Sea Islander Recognition Family Fun Day, held in Rockhampton on August 30.

The ceremony aimed to inspire other community members to undertake further study, and to provide them with a pathway to success.
The ASSI scholarship program was initiated by the Queensland Government Action Plan in the wake of the ASSI Recognition Statement in 2001. Simone's scholarship has been funded by QR along with the Department of Multicultural Affairs (Qld).
Current and former representatives of the ASSI Scholarship Board of Advice attending the recognition ceremony included Jeanette Morgan, whose address struck a chord with Simone.
"When I was granted the scholarship I didn't realise the impact that QR investment in me would have but Jeanette Morgan's address helped me realise the significance."
CQUniversity representatives on hand to offer congratulations included Pro Vice-Chancellor (Academic Services) Professor Alex Radloff, who said she could understand the challenges of Simone's 4 years of tertiary study.

Simone was able to share the recognition ceremony experience with both her immediate family members and members of the wider Australian SSI community, as well as valued University staff members.
A Rockhampton mother of 3, Simone graduated earlier this year with a double degree in Business and Professional Communication and aspires to develop her own communications business while continuing to assist the ASSI community.
