Teaching had always been his passion, so at 39 years of age he changed his career path; he sold his business and enrolled in a Bachelor of Learning Management at CQUniversity and is now well on his way to becoming a secondary school teacher, specializing in Industrial Technology and Design.

Recently, Jamie was awarded 'winner' of the Bundaberg University of the Third Age Prize for his academic achievement.

Nina Higgins, President of U3A Bundaberg, said her organisation promoted the pursuit of life-long learning.

"Jamie is a credit to himself and is a testament to others that learning never stops," she said.

Jamie elected to study via FLEX and is currently undertaking 4 subjects a term, along with his prac. Because of his experience and qualifications, he was able to get recognition of prior learning (RPL) and has been able to fast-track his degree.

"When I get into a manual arts classroom during uni prac, I just love it. It can't come around quick enough. The practical experience is so positive and rewarding. The support from host schools, mentor teachers, teachers and students means so much to me; it gives me a real buzz," he said.

As an employer, Jamie's focus was in providing quality training. He encouraged a good work ethic and for staff to take pride in their work. He is now focused on incorporating these characteristics into the classroom environment, giving the tradespeople of the future the necessary skills and knowledge towards their chosen careers.

Not only does Jamie study full time, he's also working 3 days a week for a local cabinet making business owned and operated by his apprentice mentor from 23 years ago.

"It's all about giving back to the community," said Jamie.  "I was really fortunate with my business and I've been extremely lucky to have surrounded myself with such positive, knowledgeable people. The support and guidance from CQUniversity staff since starting my studies have been both positive and supportive. This has made my learning journey a rewarding experience.  I recommend anyone who has a desire to change direction in their life and career to contact CQUniversity."
