Gladstone STEPS students to graduate this Friday

Thirty-one STEPS students will graduate at a ceremony to be held at the Gladstone campus this Friday October 5.

Current Miss Australia, Kimberley Busteed will be guest speaker for the ceremony and will join the students and CQU staff in a celebration of the students' achievements.

One STEPS graduate, David Woods said the hard work and effort he had put into his studies was all worth it.

He left school almost 30 years ago and gained qualifications as a diesel fitter, worked and travelled around the world and Australia and now manages his own transport business. PhotoID:4874, STEPS student, David Woods is looking forward to Friday's graduation ceremony

This year, David decided to try something different and enrolled in Central Queensland University's STEPS accelerated program, a course that helps prepare adults for tertiary education.

"As I get closer to 50 I've really had to think about my future.  Realistically I'm not going to be able to keep up the physically demanding work that I do for much longer so I'm planning ahead and giving myself broader options and the chance to enter a totally different career field.

"Fortunately I didn't find the workload with STEPS too daunting.  It's the same as most things; if you take it seriously and get in and do the work then it's never too much of a problem," said Mr Wood.

David said he hopes to have a break after the graduation ceremony before returning to study in 2007.

"I'd like to enrol in CQU's Bachelor of Property and study that part-time while still working full time in my business.

"STEPS has been an enlightening and at times confronting process.  I encourage anyone with an interest to give it a go and if you use some common sense to plan your time and just get in and attack the work from the start, then you won't have any problems," said Mr Woods.

At this stage, 25 of the STEPS graduates have applied to study at CQU in 2008 with a further 4 students still considering their options.

The Gladstone STEPS graduation ceremony will be held on campus this Friday October 5 at 5:30pm.
