Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

World-renowned composer to inspire Mackay performers 

Following sell-out concerts in New York, Europe and the West End, Tony Award-winning composer, Jason Robert Brown will be touring Australia giving a series of concerts and master classes around the continent.

Renowned for his master classes, Brown will be working with budding Australian performers in key cities including Mackay.

The public master class is open to all members of the public and will be held at the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music Theatre at CQUniversity Mackay on Saturday March 12 from 3pm to 6pm.

He will also work with Bachelor of Theatre students at CQUniversity to explore the development of music theatre and will discuss his insights and inspirations drawn from an extensive and eclectic range of the music theatre repertoire.

CQUniversity's Bachelor of Theatre students come from all over Australia to study music theatre and drama in Mackay, and this master class will be the first of a number of exciting learning and performance opportunities that are planned for the Central Queensland Conservatorium of Music in 2011.

Hailed as ‘one of Broadway's smartest and most sophisticated songwriters since Stephen Sondheim' and influenced by musical legends such as Leonard Bernstein, Billy Joel, Paul Simon, Joni Mitchell and Stevie Wonder, Brown is a composer and lyricist who has an impressive body-of-work and a dedicated following from musical theatre fans worldwide.

Brown's The Last 5 Years was named one of Time Magazine's 10 Best of 2001 and won Drama Desk Awards for Best Music and Best Lyrics. Parade, which was directed by the legendary Harold Prince premiered at Lincoln Center Theatre in 1998, and subsequently won both the Drama Desk and New York Drama Critics' Circle Awards for Best New Musical, as well as garnering Brown the Tony Award for Original Score.

Brown's credits also include Songs for a New World, a theatrical song cycle, which played Off Broadway in 1995, and has since been seen in hundreds of productions around the world.
