CQUniversity Gladstone's Centre for Environmental Management will be showcasing its local activities during Ecofest...
CEM (www.cem.cqu.edu.au) provides knowledge and skills to support environmentally sustainable development throughout Central Queensland and beyond.
CEM has 6 main fields of endeavour - i) terrestrial ecology ii) freshwater ecology, iii) marine and coastal ecology, iv) environmental resource economics, v) ecotoxicology and industrial waters, vi) sustainable regional development and some associated social studies.
The focus is on issues associated with sustainable regional development, accounting for the costs of environmental impacts, biodiversity management, rehabilitation success, ecosystem functional indicators of environmental performance and integrated regional monitoring.
The main areas of activity for the centre in Gladstone are:
- Marine and estuarine habitat assessments and monitoring
- Seagrass, mangrove and sediment analysis and assessment
- Water quality sampling and monitoring
- Reef and fish surveys
- Monitoring of Frog and Toad populations
- Effluent and toxicity testing
- Habitat mapping
- Geographical Information systems and remote sensing
- And many more activities that help to support and enhance our natural flora, fauna, waterways and lifestyles.

- Use a microscope to try and identify the marine creatures found in Gladstone harbour
- See some of the animals used in laboratory experiments
- Learn some of the results from CEM's research
- Find out about the equipment used for sampling the marine environment
