When Michelle Roberts decided to use internationally renowned art supplies company Matisse Derivan as the subject for an assignment for her communications degree at Central Queensland University, she never thought it would have the impact it did.

Michelle had already worked part-time for Matisse Derivan as a consultant for a couple of years and when the opportunity arose to use a ‘real life' company for assignments Matisse Derivan was the obvious choice.

"I'm sure this is the main reason why they created a position specifically for me."

Michelle is now the company's Marketing and Communications Manager. Matisse Derivan was so impressed by Michelle's work, they created a position just for her.

She is involved in the company's public relations, marketing, graphic design, web design, video production and photography and conducts demonstrations and training across Australia.

"The position was offered to me while I was still studying and was tailored to the skills I developed whilst studying.

"I have an art/painting background, which is what initially brought me in contact with Matisse Derivan - they make my favourite artist paints."

"So being able to work for a company I believe in is fantastic."

Furthermore, Michelle was amazed when they offered her the chance to work remotely from Rockhampton for the Sydney-based company.

"It is more than I could ever have hoped for.

"Studying through CQU and utilising many of its distance education facilities made transition into working from home much easier."

Michelle has lived in Rockhampton nearly all her life, is married and is raising her 2 children in the area. She had no desire to leave.

Before deciding on studying communications at CQU, Michelle completed a career analysis program through CQU's career advisory service. This gave her a good idea of what her strengths were and led her to the communications degree.

"Once I started my degree, I think I just loved learning so much, that I really immersed myself in it. The tutors and lecturers I had along the way have proven to be not only great teachers, but also developed into a good support network."

Michelle graduated in March this year.
