Engaging Indigenous people within Higher Ed

CQUniversity's Office of Indigenous Engagement recently hosted a visit from the Oodgeroo Unit of Queensland University of Technology (QUT), at Rockhampton Campus.

Professor Anita Lee Hong, Director of the Oodgeroo Unit, and Lone Pearce, Project Officer, met with Office of Indigenous Engagement staff to discuss employment issues and best practice models for engaging Indigenous people within the higher education sector, including governance matters.

CQU examples on AUQA Good Practice Database 

CQU has been invited by AUQA (the Australian Universities Quality Agency) to submit a number of good practices in quality assurance to the Good Practice Database from among the commendations listed in the Audit Report.

The AUQA Good Practice Database was developed as a benchmarking resource for higher education organisations seeking information on good practices to adapt and adopt. Entries into the AUQA Good Practice Database are by invitation only.

PhotoID:3569 The following 8 commendations have been selected from the audit report of CQU:.

i) Commendation 2:.

AUQA commends Central Queensland University (CQU) for helping students manage the transition into university study through its successful STEPS program.

ii) Commendation 3:.

AUQA commends CQU for its course management system, which helps to ensure the consistency of the content and delivery of the University’s offerings across all locations and modes.

iii) Commendation 4:.

AUQA commends CQU for an effective system of moderation which is implemented consistently across all teaching sites.

iv) Commendation 5:.

AUQA commends CQU for effectively managing the provision of its programs and courses across all its campuses and locations through its Multi-Campus/Teaching Site Academic Roles and Responsibilities document, which sets out clear procedures that are being implemented consistently.

Commendations 3, 4 & 5 were requested by AUQA to be combined into one good practice.

v) Commendation 6:.

AUQA commends CQU for attending to the academic progression of students through the Student Journey project, which identifies and provides support across all campuses for students academically at risk.

vi) Commendation 7:.

AUQA commends CQU for supporting its first-year students and providing leadership development opportunities to senior students through the CQU Student Mentor and Leadership Program.

vii) Commendation 10:.

PhotoID:3570 AUQA commends CQU for its offshore international operations strategy of focusing on a few key partnerships, with robust quality assurance systems based on its ESOS manual, and strong partnership management. In particular, AUQA requested focus on the ESOS Manual.

viii) Commendation 11:.

AUQA commends CQU’s Nullo Yumbah Indigenous Learning, Spirituality & Research Centre for establishing a concentration of expertise and energy for Indigenous issues which will benefit the University and its wider stakeholders.

Submissions to the AUQA Good Practice Database will be reviewed by 2 impartial AUQA Honorary Auditors and the AUQA Audit Director who participated in the audit. Each Good Practice will be hyperlinked to CQU’s website.
