Trade union histories of Townsville and Rockhampton compared
Published on 30 June, 2004
Two delegates to next week’s 12th annual International Employment Relations Association conference (July 5-8) will relate a comparison of the trade union histories of Townsville and Rockhampton.
While the main conference is being held at Yeppoon, the historical perspectives will be delivered in an appropriate setting at Rockhampton’s heritage-listed former Supreme Court in East Street, from 2.30pm-5pm on Tuesday, July 6.
Members of the public are welcome to attend this free event.
CQU historian Dr Barbara Webster (pictured) explores Rockhampton's reputation for comparative industrial quiescence by drawing some contrasts with the more militant Townsville.
Meanwhile, CQU academic Gordon Stewart will compare the industrial actions and tactics of export meatworkers in Rockhampton and Townsville over a long period.
The Rockhampton-based academics will be joined on the podium by University of Wollongong academic Frances Laneyrie, who will discuss a documentary film on the South Coast Labour Council, the peak union body for the Illawarra Region. ENDS.
