All lights 'green' since trainee teacher moved to Emerald

When trainee teacher Jessica Goodman moved to Emerald due to her partner's work transfer she could not believe there were no traffic lights but was consoled by the existence of a ‘Maccas'.

In terms of study and career pathways, the move has been ‘green lights all the way'.

"Emerald's teaching course (via CQUniversity's Bachelor of Learning Management) offers more opportunities for prac and it constantly updates the pathways of the course to reflect the current teaching standards and frameworks," Jessica said.

"I came from a Bachelor of Education degree program in Brisbane which did not offer a prac until 3rd year; in comparison to stepping into the BLM at Emerald and being put out into classrooms straight away.

"This definitely provides better opportunities to acquire skills in order to become a competent teacher".

Jessica said she was enjoying Emerald's relaxed lifestyle and had thoroughly enjoyed being involved in the local schools.

"I do miss my family and friends terribly so they are huge factors in how I perceive Emerald, however, I look forward to hopefully completing my country service either in Emerald or the surrounding areas.

"I would honestly suggest to anyone wanting to pursue a career in teaching, that has the opportunity to be able to move to Emerald, to come and complete their degree at the Emerald campus.

"I've had nothing but support from the staff out there. It is fantastic and this is reflected in my results.

"I love volleyball and I play on a touch team with some friends. As I have carried on face painting in Emerald, I am occasionally involved with community events and the Lions markets. I usually try to get involved with things at my prac school; for example I was involved in a production of High School Musical, helping with the microphones and rehearsals, as well as Under 8's Day."

Hopefully Emerald will also be able to draw on Jessica's musical background with the Australian Youth Choir one day. As a choir member she toured Europe with the Vienna Boys Choir, recorded a CD with Darryl Cotton, sang at the opening of an Australian Test Cricket match and also performed before renowned political figures, including Prime Minister John Howard, at a conference regarding Reconciliation.
