CQU Gladstone PhD student Flavio Coelho (pictured centre) has set a trend for citizenship ceremonies by including a representative of local Indigenous people when he become an Australian.
As part of the ceremony, Flavio sought permission from Indigenous people to live on their land.
Local Indigenous representative Jacqui Johnson (pictured) said the move was positive for the relationship with local Indigenous people.
According to The Gladstone Observer, Ms Johnson said she would like to see the inclusion of local Indigenous representatives in future citizenship ceremonies.
Gladstone Mayor Peter Corones (pictured right) said the move was a first for the council, but it was a symbol he would like to see continue.
Flavio's homeland is Brazil.
