Anti-discrimination leader says tension building

Frustration and alienation that some indigenous people feel towards the government is mounting according to Queensland's top spokesperson on discrimination matters, who spoke at Central Queensland University Rockhampton (CQU) Friday.

Anti-discrimination commissioner for Queensland Susan Booth focused on education, health and community issues in Central Queensland communities during a lecture she delivered at CQU -- marking International Human Rights Day -- entitled "Indigenous rights are human rights".

"Now more than ever... there is an illustration of the frustration and alienation some indigenous people feel towards the government," she said, referring to calls from indigenous leaders for nation-wide protests in the wake of recent events on Palm Island.

CQU's manager for equity and diversity, Margaret Culmsee, said the presentation showcased the University's commitment to raise awareness of social issues that affect the local community.

"CQU concentrates its efforts and energies not only the skills students require to excel in their courses but the skills needed for peaceful co-existence in our communities," she explained.

Commissioner Booth said International Human Rights Day activities at the University were timely reminders of the importance for reconciliation.

"If we are all to progress we can't do so at the expense of one group," she said. Recently released figures document the diversity of CQU's community, with students from 109 different nations.

The guest lecture was organised by the University's Equity and Diversity Office and Nulloo Yumbah, a division of CQU committed to increasing knowledge and awareness of the needs of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and communities.
