The award is based on peer review of CV and portfolio materials and is the highest level of recognition within The College, exemplifying nursing professionalism.

Recipients are recognised for the significance of their personal contribution to the profession.

Apart from Mr Broadbent's contributions to the profession via clinical practice and teaching, a principle component of the decision to award the Fellowship was his body of work surrounding the emergency assessment and management of clients with a mental illness in the emergency department.

This work has had national exposure and is the key evidence used in the training of all emergency nurses across Australia.

The College of Nursing was established as a professional body to represent, assist, educate and support nurses.

Membership spans every Australian State and Territory, and 17 countries worldwide.
