Awarded research proves fruitful

Professor Paul Hyland has been recognised in the Emerald Literati Network Awards for Excellence for his paper, ‘Statistical techniques to facilitate the launch price of fresh fruit: Bringing science to the art of pricing'.

Emerald, an international publishing house celebrating its 40th anniversary in 2007, awards an ‘Outstanding Paper' and up to 3 ‘Highly Commended' awards from the journals it publishes each year (some 180 currently).

The paper highlights the expertise of the Faculty of Business and Informatics, combining Professor Hyland's research into product innovation and commercialisation and Professor John Rolfe's data analysis expertise, along with the dedication of co-authors and researchers Dr Claudine Soosay, now based at the University of South Australia, and Associate Professor Phil Bretherton, Deputy Dean of Arts, Humanities and Education.

The research funded by Harvest Fruit Company, a company specialising in freshly cut fruit, and conducted in Brisbane and Rockhampton, allows businesses to accurately predict what the consumer will pay for a product, thus saving the suppliers and retailers substantial amounts of money.

The launch of a new product into the marketplace involves substantial risk and planning.  With analytical tools to efficiently test-market the product price, the study conducted by CQU researchers used rigorous methods to statistically analyse survey data.

The results establish the key demographics of the sample, the price and the main product offering, as well as establishing the price range for market launch in 2 regions.

The techniques used provide real-time information that can be used in developing a marketing plan, identifying and reducing the risk of a product launch.

The Emerald Literati Network considers ‘Outstanding Papers' as the backbone to the awards, and with the volume of impressive pieces the judging team see each year, being singled out is admirable.
