More than $8500 was awarded to Central Queensland primary schools at the Central Queensland University Multicultural Fair and Open Day for their winning entries in a digital imagery competition.
Winning schools in the Prep to Year 4 Awards were:
Woorabinda State School Year 2 (First prize of $2000)
St Anthony's Primary School Year 2F (group 3) (Second prize of $1500)
Park Avenue State School (Prep) (Encouragement prize of $750).
Winning schools in the Year 5 to 7 Awards were:
Glenmore State School (school entry combined class) (First prize of $2000)
Woorabinda State School (Year 7 Special Ed class) (second prize of $1500)
St Josephs primary School (Year 7 class) (encouragement award of $750).
The judges all agreed that Woorabinda State School and Glenmore State School were stand-outs in the competition, clearly showcasing the students' understanding of issues of multiculturalism in Australia.
CQU coordinated workshops in digital imagery for the school students in the lead-up to the competition.
Multicultural Affairs Queensland funded the project through a Multicultural Assistance Program grant. It was part of a 3-year grant which commenced in 2005 and culminated this year.
The competition required students to collaborate to create a multimedia presentation about multiculturalism in Australia. This could include history, contemporary issues, stories of inclusion and diversity or other ideas that include the ethos of acceptance in modern Australian society.
