CQUniversity connects with communities, Bundaberg next on agenda

CQUniversity has begun a series of forums designed to help communities embrace their power of place.

Early evening forums were held at Mackay, Rockhampton and Gladstone last week week and a Bundaberg Campus event is scheduled for Monday October 4, from 4.30pm-7pm.

Vice-Chancellor Professor Scott Bowman welcomed community guests and outlined some of the initiatives the University is undertaking as part of campus renewals, as well as its plans to become a dual-sector university.

Dr Pierre Viljoen, Pro Vice-Chancellor (Community and Engagement) and Head of Mackay campus, chaired the discussions which unearthed some interesting comments from guests.

The event provided a great chance for the community to highlight opportunities worth pursuing.

"The University will be held accountable for follow-up," Dr Viljoen said.

"It will be establishing a regional engagement committee on each campus.

"We will be meeting again in a year to talk about what we have achieved. This is not a one-off event and will be happening on an annual basis."

A wide range of topics were discussed, including the need to make scholarships for students available in a wider range of subjects. As well, participants were interested in how the University can work with the community, addressing integration of migrants, geriatric care, the aging workforce and pathways for trade and mining professionals (to prevent knowledge leaving the industry).

Following these forums, feedback will be used to develop projects for Community Engagement Reference Groups.  To ensure outcomes, continuity and ownership, relevant University, industry and community members will be invited to join Community Engagement Reference Groups that will be directed by each campus Regional Engagement Committee.
