Children in crisis set to receive benefits of $800 000 research grant

An $800 000 research grant won by Central Queensland University will be used to help children in crisis.

The funding has been earmarked for school-based support systems and work related to child protection agencies.

PhotoID:654 Education & Creative Arts faculty Sub-Dean Bruce Knight said three Mackay schools were included in the three-year trial project.

“Part of the funding allows a social worker to work with students in these schools. There are huge benefits for having this person in the school as children in need are getting the attention they require to help them through difficult times,” he said.

“In the past social workers have been put in schools, but this is the first time an inter-disciplinary approach is being used whereby the assistance is provided in collaboration with the Department of Families and Education Queensland.

“The researchers aim to work with industry partners and others from the within the Mackay community to develop, implement, research and evaluate a model for a successful school-based multi-disciplinary approach. This approach would be co-ordinated by social workers to deliver a support service to young persons presenting at risk.

PhotoID:655 Indicators of ‘at risk’ may include, but are not limited to: emotional, sexual and/or physical abuse; neglect; violent and inappropriate behaviour; engagement in criminal activities; domestic and family violence; and dysfunctional family environment.

Mackay North State High School, Mackay North State School and Fitzgerald State School have been included in the trial.
