Experience different cultures at CQ Multicultural Fair

Thousands of visitors are expected to converge on CQU Rockhampton to attend this year’s Central Queensland Multicultural Fair and CQU Rockhampton Open Day on Sunday, August 14.

Visitors to the Fair will experience and enjoy the many different cultures that have become a part of our Australian way of life and will have the opportunity to taste the many wonderful world foods on offer.

PhotoID:2432 The Fair promises world-class entertainment including music from Sirocco. From performing to an estimated audience of 200,000 on Australia Day 1999 to a dance with the Dayaks in a jungle clearing in central Borneo, there is no band in the world with the experience of Sirocco.

Coordinator of the Fair, Gina Yarrow said Sirocco reflects the creativity, popularity, charm and humour (and a touch of larrikinism) that is the spirit of modern Australia.

Their instruments range from Middle Eastern flutes to Irish drums to modern synthesisers. Their performances take their audience on a voyage around the world on a magic carpet woven from their exotic instruments.

“Just like modern Australia, they distil the best from the cultures that make up our country and produce a unique Australian style. At one minute the soft lyrical air on a Celtic flute to a raucous infectious dance beat on didgeridoo and Turkish drums.”.

A group of German singers and bell ringers will also perform along with popular local acoustic band Biorhythms, The Bushmill Band, Bangladeshi dancers, Aussie poet Lea Enchelmaier, MNA traditional folk dancers, line dancers and belly dancers.

“For the young children, Bob the Builder is sure to be a huge hit,” Mrs Yarrow said. “Bob will take time out of his hectic building schedule to meet and greet Central Queensland children and enjoy in the festivities.”.

PhotoID:2433 “We also have the Rainbows who will provide entertainment for the children throughout the day. The Rainbows Show features colourful balloon play, singing and dancing, along with some amazing Rainbow giveaways and prizes.

“The Multicultural Fair is definitely a day out for the whole family – there is something for everyone.”.

CQ Multicultural Fair is a joint initiative between CQU and ABC Capricornia, with support from The Morning Bulletin.
