Desktop publishing students learn there are many schools of thought

Michelle Dann and her classmates have been involved in one of their 'most integrated' projects yet - the chance to develop from scratch some new marketing and communication tools for CQUniversity's Widening Participation campaign.

Not only have students from a range of campuses - and their flex student counterparts - been working together on a new logo, brochure, newsletter and calendar, they have also had the chance to get feedback on early designs.

Visiting students from Lakes Creek Primary School recently gave up a few hours of their time to be guinea pigs, providing early impressions on draft designs for the university student project. Meanwhile, the university students were able to present and discuss designs via videoconference.

Michelle said she was enjoying the project as she completes her Bachelor of Business degree, specialising in Management and Professional Communication.

Course Coorindator Kate Ames said students developed their designs while studying Desktop Publishing, in which they learn to use the industry standard software Adobe InDesign CS5.

"The project is real, the skills are very valuable, and I'm really proud of how far our students have come in nine weeks, where they can feel confident showing their work, which is really quite professional, to a real audience," she said.  "It has been a great experience for everyone."

CQUniversity's Stacey Doyle says the Widening Participation team is based in the Student Support Centre and partners with students from low socio-economic, regional and remote areas as well as Indigenous primary and high school students to equip them with the knowledge, resources and resilience to transition to higher education.

"The partnership is a win-win. We are so pleased to be working with a team of talented CQUniversity students to assist us with our communications campaign aimed at raising awareness of the Widening Participation programs being implemented in the Central Queensland region," Ms Doyle said.

"For most of the Lakes Creek Primary School students, this was their first visit to a university. Their visit enabled them to learn about university programs and what it is like to participate in a lecture."
