Bogie bending mimics railway curves

Rail researchers have been exerting tilting and rotating forces on a rail wagon and track segment to mimic the forces on the bogie (wheels and wagon supports) caused by curves in the track...

They have been measuring bogie deflection away from the efficient square profile, the extent of wheel wear and loss of energy as the train goes around a bend.

Results of the testing will help with improved designs for the next generation of bogies and track curve shapes.

Researcher Scott Simson is leading the research at CQUniversity's Centre for Rail Engineering on behalf of CRC Rail (the Cooperative Research Centre for Rail), in conjunction with major industry partner QR Coal.

You can see VIDEO of the testing at:

The researchers would like to acknowledge the support of the CRC for Rail Innovation, established and supported by the Australian Government's Cooperative Research Centres Program.
