Uni benefactor still sparking interest in science

Central Queensland University benefactor Dr John Lambert-Smith is still sparking interest in science, more than a quarter-century after starting a 'Science in Schools' program.

The former Callide Power Station employee (Chemist-Water Management & Environmental Officer) and long-time supporter of the University is also renowned as a 'Science Mentor', who this year created a Green Energy educational program for Mt Murchison School (a Queensland school of excellence).

Dr Lambert-Smith started 'Science in Schools' in 1981 when he was Power Station Chemist Collinsville.

With encouragement from power station manager Ted Scott, he ensured the program continued with enhanced activity in the Biloela area from 1987 onwards.

This year, Dr Lambert-Smith has been introducing students to the use of hydrogen fuel cells to produce electricity. The 6-week course involved discussion and experimentation centred on the use of solar panels and hydrogen fuel cells.

The students staged an inventor's convention after completing the course, including a presentation on their individual work.

"This involved some assistance (tutoring) in presentation.  It was a great experience for the kids and for me," Dr Lambert-Smith said.

The project was supported by the Solar Hydrogen Research Institute and Fuel Cell Institute of Australia, which donated model car kits, hydrogen bowsers and fuel cells.

Dr Lambert-Smith has received invitations to speak at other schools thanks to the popularity of his program which was showcased at the Biloela Show this year.

"The immediate plan for the future is to take the developed courses to the 44 schools in Holroyd City (Holroyd is adjacent to Parramatta in Greater Sydney). This includes every high school (Year 10) and every primary school (Year 6) in Holroyd.  The plan is for this to happen early 2008."
