CQU Rockhampton Language Centre has been commended for handling a rapid growth in candidates for the International English Language Testing System, known as IELTS.
IELTS Australia reports the Rockhampton centre hosted 286 candidates during 2006 - a growth of 472% over 2005.
Acting Director of Studies Helen Stewart said the Rockhampton centre has already tested 160 candidates in 2007 (February-May). It is expected to test a further 35 on June 16 and even more on July 14.
IELTS Australia has written to the Rockhampton centre to explain there has been an unexpected and unprecedented demand for IELTS since the Australian Government changed visa regulations, requiring all candidates applying for permanent residency to take an IELTS test.
Test numbers in Australia for 2006 increased by 94% over the same period in 2005.
"As well as increasing candidate numbers, the Board is aware that centres have been active in training new examiners, clerical markers, invigilators and centre support staff in order to support the growth," said the IELTS Australia Chair Professor Deane Terrell in a letter to testing centres.
