MP praises CQU domestic violence centre

State Member for Mackay Tim Mulherin has praised the work of the Queensland Centre for Domestic and Family Violence Research during a speech to Parliament on August 17.

The QCDFVR is based at CQU Mackay.

Mr Mulherin congratulated Centre director Ms Heather Nancarrow and her staff for organising the recent Indigenous Family Violence Prevention: Which Way Now? forum.

"It was a pleasure to be involved and I look forward to hearing what direction will be taken from here after the Centre has the opportunity to evaluate the forum's outcomes," he said.

Participants came from throughout Queensland to highlight and celebrate Indigenous responses to Indigenous family violence and to provide an opportunity for the general public and especially for Aboriginal people and Torres Strait Islanders to participate in and work towards sustaining progress in this area.

The forum included a great range of presenters, including distinguished keynote speakers Ms Jackie Huggins AM and Professor Mick Dodson.

Ms Jackie Huggins AM is Co-Chair of Reconciliation Australia and the Deputy Director of the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit at the University of Queensland. She is also the former Chair of the Queensland Domestic Violence Council (2001). Professor Mick Dodson is Convenor of the Australian National University's Institute for Indigenous Australia and Council Chair of the Australian Institute of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies or AIATSIS.
