The winner of the first Queensland Rail Women in Engineering Scholarship was announced this month at a ceremony attended by representatives of Queensland Rail and Central Queensland University.
Jenny McKenna, a third-year Co-op student, will receive financial assistance of $10,000 over two years through the scholarship.
The award is based on a combination of academic results over the first two years of the Bachelor of Engineering program, and a one page summary of the student's perceptions of the future of the rail industry.
Professor Rhondda Jones, Acting Vice-Chancellor, presented Jenny with a certificate congratulating her on her success.
Professor Jones thanked Queensland Rail for their foresight in encouraging women to enter the engineering profession, saying that 15 years ago, low numbers of female engineering students would not have been considered a problem but rather the norm.
Professor Jones said that the University was proud to announce that this year's Bachelor of Engineering intake included 14 women among the cohort of 70 in Rockhampton – an outstanding success.
