Stan Jones recognised with naming of former courthouse precinct
Published on 15 December, 2004
Hon Justice Stan Jones has been recognised for his dedication and commitment to the Rockhampton legal system and Central Queensland University with the naming of the ‘Stan Jones Precinct’ in Rockhampton.
The precinct incorporates the former District Court, Supreme Court and Magistrates Court in East Street, which now house CQU functions. It therefore represents the link between the work of Justice Jones in both the legal profession and the University in Rockhampton.
Justice Jones is now serving with the Supreme Court in Cairns.
He served as Chancellor of Central Queensland University from 1992 to 2004, during which time he was elected into the role five times. The naming of the precinct was the culmination of a number of events and ceremonies to mark the retirement of Justice Jones as CQU Chancellor earlier this year.
Justice Jones has had a long association with the city of Rockhampton; serving in the city as a Barrister for almost 30 years, serving as the Foundation Chairman of the Rockhampton Aboriginal Legal Service and having various levels of involvement with Central Queensland University as it existed in its many forms from 1974 to 2004.
Justice Jones was Chancellor of Central Queensland University when the decision was made to lease the three former court buildings which are now used by business and journalism students and staff and various University committees.
Around 50 invited guests, including recently-retired CQU Vice-Chancellor Dr Glenice Hancock, attended a ceremony which included an unveiling of the new Stan Jones Precinct sign and speeches by CQU Chancellor Rennie Fritschy and Justice Jones.
