High school students to speak out on harmony

Central Queensland University is coordinating a public speech competition for high school students as part of Rockhampton’s Harmony Day celebrations.

The Rockhampton City Council will celebrate Harmony Day on March 18 with activities staged at the Walter Reid Centre, including the speech competition.

Students from years 8 to 12 are encouraged to participate in the competition with the winner and runner-up receiving trophies, gift vouchers and certificates.

There is also the possibility the winners will be interviewed on the breakfast/morning shows at ABC Capricornia. ABC Capricornia will also publish the winning speeches and photos of the winners on the station’s website.

Coordinator of the competition Rema Dhanasekar said she believed the winning speech should inspire school students to think about social, environmental, economical and national issues.

“This competition aims to provide an opportunity for students to be recognised and awarded for their talents,” Ms Dhanasekar explained.

Harmony Day provides an opportunity for people to become involved in activities that encourage understanding, respect and acceptance for everyone within the community.

Rockhampton's Harmony Day 2007 program was funded through the Multicultural Assistance Program.
