CQ teens experience science at CQU

More than 60 secondary school students discovered the wonders of science at the Siemens Science Experience in Rockhampton this week.

Students from throughout the region explored various areas of science and technology when they took part in the science summer school from January 18-20 at CQU Rockhampton.

PhotoID:1804 Siemens Science Experience is designed for students entering year 10 at secondary school who have a keen interest in the sciences and may be interested in pursuing a science career.

The students completed a variety of hands-on activities to give them an insight into how the knowledge gained through texts and classroom experiments is applied in real-life situations.

Director of the Siemens Science Experience in Rockhampton Sheila Jeffery said the science summer school provided valuable experiences and opportunities for the region’s young people.

“All the activities stem from various programs taught at CQU and allow the students to understand the requirements of various professions.

“Science and technology is an integral part of our lives and the role of science is becoming increasingly more important,” Mrs Jeffery explained.

“The aim of the program is to develop and foster the interest of young people in science and technology. Programs like Siemens Science Experience are important in providing inspiration and motivation for students to pursue a career in the many varied fields of science and technology.”.

Laboratory-based activities included experimenting with tissue cultures, solving an engineering problem, assessing fitness, making movies, and assessing the growth of aquaculture species.

Keynote speakers included Robert Forsterlee, who spoke on the contribution of psychology to forensic science, and Dr Juliet Sutherland who spoke on her work with the CSIRO.
