CQU academic leads peak body review

First Vice-Chair of the Council for Australian University Tourism and Hospitality Education (CAUTHE) Associate Professor Gayle Jennings, CQU School of Marketing and Tourism, has facilitated a one-day workshop designed to review the functions and purpose of CAUTHE.

CAUTHE is the peak body for Australian Universities engaged in tourism and hospitality teaching and research.

PhotoID:1429 Professor Leo Jago, Deputy CEO and Director of Research, Sustainable Tourism CRC, commented in regard to the workshop, “this was a great initiative [of the CAUTHE Executive] and the outcomes will help ensure the further development and sustainability of the CAUTHE organisation by enhancing the range and relevance of services that the organisation provides to members. Gayle [Jennings] did a great job in facilitating the workshop and had clearly done much preparation for the day.”.

Associate Professor Gayle Jennings stated that the recent workshop was one part of a two-phase process to enable University and Associate members of CAUTHE to participate in the review process of its future roles and functions.

The second phase comprises e-participation.

Based on workshop and e-participation outcomes, the Annual General Meeting of CAUTHE in February 2005 will consider any changes and additions to the Objects and Rules.

One key initiative suggested at the workshop was the preparation of an annual and nationally focussed ‘Status of Tourism and Hospitality Education Report’.

At the workshop, the Chair of CAUTHE, Dr Perry Hobson, Southern Cross University, reiterated that the current mission of CAUTHE is to promote the development of tourism and hospitality education and research in Australia primarily through four objects:.

* Promoting and developing Tourism and Hospitality education within the University sector. * Promoting and developing Tourism and Hospitality education within the various sectors of the Tourism and Hospitality industry.

* Encouraging co-operation among University providers, and other providers and industry.

* Representing the interests of University Tourism and Hospitality education to industry, government and community.

The workshop was held in Melbourne and hosted by Victoria University.

CQU has been a Chapter member since the inception of CAUTHE, with Associate Professor Les Killion as Chapter Director.
