Agricultural workers at the bottom of the income chain
Published on 13 March, 2003
Paid agricultural workers occupy the bottom income strata in Australia, according to a Central Queensland lecturer.
Jim McAllister, Lecturer in Sociology with the School of Psychology and Sociology, said these workers also live “on the fringes”.
“They often live in the second house on the farm property, in the rural village, on the outskirts of the regional cities, and in the outer suburbs of the metropolitan areas,” he said Thursday.
Mr McAllister presented and reviewed data sourced from two conferences held in Brisbane last year.
Mr McAllister hopes to locate agricultural employees nationally and to define a context for further research on livelihoods and lifestyles of this seriously under-researched category of Australian workers.
