Gladstone Campus Library celebrates decade of service

CQUniversity Gladstone's Cyril Golding Library will celebrate its 10th birthday on September 23, having already handled more than 130,000 loans and almost a quarter-million customer visits...

Gladstone residents are of course welcome to the birthday celebration* (from 11am-2pm), since the community raised $653,000 towards the original construction cost of over $1 million.

The Library was named in honour of Cyril Golding who made a significant contribution to CQUniversity Gladstone over many years.

It underwent a significant refurbishment in early 2006 to introduce an 'information commons' facility.

This included a 25-seat computer room fitted out for teaching, cafe-style seating enabling students to work in groups around a central computer, new computer stations and new table arrangements to accommodate various learning styles. Wireless internet access was installed, as well as a new student printing and photocopying system.

The information commons also includes coffee and vending machines to ensure students' comfort.

The Library collection is not just based on books - there's also online links to many thousands of research journals and specialty resources to support the various courses offered by the University. The collection also includes prominent Gladstone poet Val Vallis' personal collection of valuable books and rare first editions, mainly covering literature and art.

Gladstone residents are welcome to visit the library and use many of the resources. For those wanting to borrow materials, a fee-based community membership is available.

Senior high school students are encouraged to make use of the Library's discipline specific resources and facilities when assignment time comes around.

* The birthday program includes a book fair sale, information sessions on the internet for Gen Y and seniors and free face-painting.

RSVPs to library sessions can be made via 4970 7357.
