Mackay Environmental Science students test the waters

Unhealthy waterway concerns raised by Walkerston residents have prompted CQU Mackay Environmental Science students to undertake water quality tests in the area.
Residents consulted CQU Environmental Science Lecturer Judith Wake after noticing parts of Bakers Creek were black and smelly.
“The students will be assessed on the observations and recordings they made from visits to four different sites along Bakers Creek,” she said.
“They looked at the oxygen levels present, pH levels and general signs of organic pollution.” Dr Wake said the amount of dissolved oxygen in the creek was particularly important for the health of the waterway.
“If there isn’t enough oxygen present, the animals in the creek that require high levels of oxygen die and break down, which uses more oxygen.” She said in these circumstances the creek quickly becomes lifeless.
Results from the tests are expected in early October.
